strettle gets 5 tries

30odd - 7!
We played against Hornets 3rds remembering that their 1st team is 3-4 leagues above us.
We were blessed with a lot of players including our 1st team captain Liam, who obviously, despite uncle Steve's demands didn't play! We had a good warm up with a squad of approx 25 and awaited the kickoff.
It was difficult to tell whether they had split forwards and backs evenly or just that their backs had all played prop at some point. The first 10-15 mins were tense with Hornets superior forward advantage and good running centres making it difficult for Mary's. Possession was difficult to claim but eventually we battled our way up the pitch and scored a try. This was repeated during the 1st half the defensive line was ably led by Tom 'Tub of goo'. As the match progressed we reached the end of the 1st half 3 tries to nil up, by this time our front row had settled down and Boyland along with the sweating Ainsworth scrummaged efficiently. Our line outs had performed well with Munday calling the variables and Bourton and Longman obliging, ably assisted by their lifters no more so than King the Tackling Demon.
Once again the backbone to the team was Pearce and Caple, who led the Backs extremely well. It was good to see Portchy returned from Strangeways and he played well despite the tag on his leg. The dream partnership of Madigan and Broughton was always going to spark fireworks and initially their partnership payed off until they tackled the same man - then we had Blood and Bumps.
As always our back 3 were commanding and the more ball they get the more tries we score, Strettle fresh from not having played last week and knowing that his dad was flush decided to score 5 tries.
As the match continued P***ks of the week mounted with fumbles fijian passes and balls knocked on over the line. It got so bad that Selman said "who will you nominate the choice is so vast?" Little were we to know that Selman would put himself at the forefront!.
In the 2nd half Rhodes came on to resume his rightful place and Selman who was unable to make up his mind played in the front, middle and back row. With the Bristol bench warmer commenting that he was a natural loosehead. By this time our initial 2 stupid centres had clashed heads meaning that Dan (new boy) and Tom (I've a point to prove ) made an impact. Tom Lawlor was good enough to play for the opposition and Liams entourage (Adam) played in the pack - well done.
Discussion in the bar revolved around what a great 2nd team we have and their desire and guile is something we can learn from.
Next week IMPAVIDUS
Ps a young man aged 17 drinking coke and not yet smoking made his debut, we were worried as we thought he was like his Dad - but NO he could pass, catch and Kick and when required tackle - what a great Debut look forward to seeing more from Curtis!
