Boe Puts In Outstanding Shift

St Mary’s bounced back from their last home performance with a commanding victory over North Petherton last weekend. It was an emotional day for the visitors with the passing of JC, a huge figure in the club, and all concerned deserve great credit for honouring the fixture and for the performance and commitment they put in on the day. We have no doubt he would have been very proud of all.

On the pitch Mary’s got off to a great start when they worked the ball wide to stand in winger Fern Read who finished really well in the corner. On 12 minutes they extended the lead when Jade Gamlin slotted a penalty which was almost immediately cancelled out with a penalty kicked by Pethy. Mary’s then played some great rugby to score 3 tries in 7 minutes. Firstly Read picked up her second after a set piece move and from the kick off Laura McGlone showed her footballing skills after Donna Prince moved the ball to Danielle Rigby who put in an excellent kick into space. Ann Webb then completed the first half scoring finishing off another well worked set play and at half time the hosts were up 25-3. Second half and Pethy were fired up and took control of the game. But the home side looked dangerous on the counter and 15 minutes in winger Elaine Hughes went low and scored in the corner. Danielle Rigby was next to cross after an excellent solo run from inside her own half saw her break several tackles to show great determination and cross over. Pethy though kept coming hard at Mary’s and they scored a well deserved try following a bit of slack work from the home side. The final try of the game summed up the day. Some really strong work by the forwards being met with a determined defence before the all was moved wide and Ann Webb scored through well worked overlap. The performance from Mary’s was really encouraging in parts but still loads to work on in others. Big shouts in the pack this week to Donna Prince, Sarah Cronk and debutant Hazel Joel. In the backs Laura McGlone and Danielle Rigby were excellent whilst rookie winger Fern Read had a great first half, before moving back to the row in the second. Player of the match this week was No8 Boe Meaton who’s work rate was exceptional and who carried superbly well. Top effort.

Mary’s last league game of the year is away at Topsham on 8 Dec. Your support as always would be appreciated.
