St Mary's Beat Old Reds

St Mary's finished the league campaign with one of their best performances of the season to defeat Old Reds 24-0. Mary's had Gemma King playing out of position at 2nd row and Lisa McCormick playing her first game at fly half and with captain Lucy Bowering on holiday Bridget Sanger captain the side. Mary's found it difficult to set up any great attacks early on in the windy conditions, but once they adjusted they got the try they deserved. It was a great team try starting on right hand side of the pitch with the strong Mary's scrum turning over the ball to win possession just inside the Reds half. Quick ball out to the backs set up a good break to win a penalty which was taken quickly to put Reds further on the back foot with a run up the left wing. Number 8 Laura Mahoney then broke blind from the back of the ruck drew the last defender and player in the supporting prop Kerry Diedericks to score her first try for Mary's in the corner. Mary's then increased their lead shortly after when Lisa Yip interested the Red defence before playing in her centre partner Katie Sully to power through the remaining defenders to score under the posts. Laura Rugman converted the try to put Mary's 12-0 at the break.

The second half saw Mary's to continue to dominate the game and winger Laura Rugman should have scored but knocked on as she crossed the line. The resulting scrum to Reds was turned over and number 8 Laura Mahoney went through unchallenged to score. Mary's finished off the scoring when Katie Sully bagged her 2nd try of the game in similar style to the first which was again converted by Laura Rugman. All players played well in a great team performance to end the league on a high and Mary's now await to see who they will face in the next playoff league stage.
