Mary's Ladies gave it every thing but still cannot get their claws on that elusive win. Such a great effort and performance by every one that stepped onto the pitch makes it hard to pick the highlights but in the spirit of trying to give a fair overview here we go:
Scrum - amazing, Line Outs - amazing! Mary's Ladies took it to Oaks in the scrums and lines outs turning over the ball time and time again. The front row with Frankie Hemmings at Tighthead, Layla Barron at Hooker and Kerry Diedericks at Loosehead were propelled forward by a strong second row of Kayleigh Simmons and Francesca Golton taking it to Oaks front row hitting hard and fast allowing Layla to steal the ball literally from right under their noses! The height and control in the line outs with the number 8, Laura Mahoney, jumping was untouchable and allowed Mary's Ladies to not only win their own ball but to disrupt Oaks ball and turn it in their favour on numerous occasions!
The backs used their moves well to allow Katie Sully, playing 13, to make a break and score a try, which captain Sammy Knighton successfully converted, and were unlucky you have not made more breaks. And whoever said wingers do nothing did not watch this game, Cate Trevorah and Lisa Yip out on the wings made some superb tackles, covered well and chased Oaks down the pitch every time!
Oaks scored some lucky tries with chips over the top and putting the boot on it down the field followed by a diving competition between Cate Trevorah and their extremely quick winger. But Mary's Ladies defended brilliantly with excellent communication across the field meaning Oaks found it difficult to find gaps to break through.
For any of your reading this that wonder where that 'little' bruise on the back of your knee came from or that would just like to see the amazing game all over again – injured Lisa McCormick recorded the whole game and a few clips will soon be available for viewing online.
Three weeks now to fine tune (and recover) before Mary's Ladies take on Supermarines away - they are not 'Super' and they are certainly not 'Marines'
