SMOB U15's Win the GRFU Plate Final 22 v Painswick 10
From Zeros to Heros. - PHOTOS HERE
A poor start saw SMOB shaky from the off with forced change in the expected starting lineup (Nathan injured during the warmup) hurting the gameplan somewhat. Intense pressure from Painswick saw two tries gifted to them with poor tackling from all and indecision under the high ball from Tom H and Jack L. This coupled with a Curtis in goal catastrophy meant that after the first 15mins we were 10-nil down. After finding our feet and some space a superb break from Curtis and excellent support from Tom H saw him go over for our first try. Zeros to heros for these two. This bouyed the team for the remainder of the first half and we went in 10-5 down at the break.
Once the rolling subs issue was resolved with the officials we made the necessary changes at the start of the 2nd half that sparked a resurgence with the game plan being executed as per our coaches instructions. Nathan came on in the centre and along with Curtis and Ross started punching holes in the crumbling Painswick defence. Before long Painswick were feeling what it was like to be on the back foot - a Curtis break on the wing leading to a fantastic solo try. 10 all - GAME ON.
Great play from Arron and Alex P in the tight saw more ball for the backs, and before long Jack L earned his hero badge with a great line taking him in under the posts for 15-10, Callum added the necessary as Painswick started to flag. Our scrummage went from strength to strength with the SMOB forwards in total dominance of the Painswick pack. A peel off the side of a marauding maul saw Ross seal the game at 22-10.
Our fitness shone in the latter stages as the SMOB gameplan was executed clincally in the second half with Painswick failing to cross our line.
Top mention to ALL of the squad - especially the subs who did not get on or who had little time at the end. We may not be the "top squad" in the area, but we do have a team well worthy of their coaches and each other.

Wed 30/04/08 - SMOB 7 v 46 Cleve RFC - Cecil Grant Memorial
After their close losing final last Sunday Cleve came out hurting and seeking a win - SMOB held them off leaving a toughly contested first third at 0-0 - Cleves strongest starters were held at bay. The second session saw a start with much of the same - the first 10mins of that session remaining scoreless. The energy expended by SMOB in defence started to wane, and Cleve broke through for the first of a few scores. Un-deterred SMOB came back with a converted try so the second session closed at 26-7. Cleve had rotated their squad by now, and with Mary's needing to blood every one in this special game, the last session went Cleve's way and the final score of 46-7 displayed the gap between the Cup Runners-up and Plate Winners.
The occasion was bigger than the game and the great friendship between the two sqauds shone through until the end - Aaron's speech was top drawer, and many people commented on how he has become like Cecil. The traditional boat race ended a very close 2-0 to Cleve - though we are sure Mary's would've top them if it was Natch or Stella.

Sun 13/04/08 - SMOB 5 v 27 Glos OBRFC
Well - an early christmas present to GOBRFC who took their first win - ever. We only took 12 players, and lost one in the first 5 minutes. Smurf going down after a Callum cross field kick with the word HOSPITAL imprinted on it. We had 6 out for county and 9 unavailable which meant we fielded the only 12 (11) we had and borrowed 4 - maybe the saturday game took it out of our guys, maybe Glos wanted it more - whichever way they deserved the win and celebrated long into the afternoon as if they had won the Heinken cup final. Well done Glaws.
Sorry no photos.
Sat 12/04/08 - SMOB 3 v 47 Altrincham & Kersal
What a great bunch of lads and parents/coaches. It is easy to see why they are Cheshire Champs - fully armed with 9 subs as good as the starting 15 they were strong in attack and defence - our early pressure led to an initial 3 points - then we struggled to break their line after that. Fair play to Mary's who stayed strong till the end even enduring a few injuries on the way.
Sorry no photos.
Sun 30/03/08 - SMOB 26 v 3 Dursley
It took a little while to break down Dursley - giving away lots of penalties in the meantime and letting them get on the score board first with a sensible kick for 0-3. Persistance paid off with a breakaway from Curtis going in under the posts - Callum adding 2 for our first score. Dursley responded with a couple of visits to the SMOB line but we held them off in defence and with superior forward power gave the backs another opportunity - they wern't going to let Curtis run in lightly this time and as he was tackled good support from Nathan saw him take the ball 5m from the line and dive over to score. Callum missed a sitter - so only 12-3 at half time. Mary's were superior in the scrum, lineout (apart from the knock ons) and the maul - a superb peel from Josh of the back of one on the line scoring the 3rd with Callum adding the 2. Our final try was from Ross with Callum's conversion leaving the final score 26-3. Our game plan was not to let them cross our line - and they never did. Fitness and a solid defence held out to the end. Well done to Alex on his debut, once he found his match feet - he added superb value to our County Back Row. Photos - Dursley - 06.04.08
Sun 30/03/08 - SMOB 70 v 0 Cinderford
Lots of opportunity to try some new moves and flourish against an at times persistent side who lacked depth and width. Nice to see tries for Bun and Birdie. Great forwards MOTM in Josh and backs MOTM with Nath (he can run at full pace when he wants to). We need to retain a solid attitiude for Dursley next week. Photos - Cinderford - 16.03.08
Sunday 09/02/08 - SMOB 12 v 41 Matson
We were beaten by a very physical well drilled side - what more can I say!
Photos - Matson - 09.03.08
Sunday 24/02/08 - SMOB 38 v 14 Widden Old Boys A good start with a nearly full squad saw a lot of possession converted into an early try for Jonathan on his last game - A couple more saw the score 31-0 at half time. With squad changes the second half showing great reslience against a determined Widden attack letting them put two converted trys in, not standing back Mary's took one more themselves - Full time 38-14 in SMOBs favour.

Sunday 10/02/08 - SMOB 14 v 35 Old Reds
A tough morning for the reduced squad with our three replacements being used very early - leaving the remaining 15 up for a hard battle. Going uphill for the first half we had to defend a very determined Old Reds pack - resolve broke on three occasions and we failed to finish our two strong attacks at the other end. 15-0 to Reds at half time. The second half saw us forget the basics and fail to capitalise on the slope and bottom corner. In went three more against us before we found our hearts in the last 10 when along with our superior fitness put over two converted tries. man of the match Birdie for his superb defence.

Sunday 03/02/08 - SMOB 36 v 24 St Brendans A good morning at the office for SMOB with lots of players out of position showing great depth and securing a fantastic win without their 5 county players. Apparantly the forwards were awesome, the back row in particular. The backs demonstrated that they all have the experience now to execute a game plan. Well done to all.
After the game - Billy's head shave took placein the clubhouse - see below for photos of the entire day.

Sunday 27/01/08 - SMOB 29 v 22 Painswick
Another day of errors and mistakes by the Mary's squad saw a win made more difficult than it should have been - the basics were missing at times when second nature should have taken over and allowed flowing rugby to come. A very comitted Painswick side took the early spoils from the first SMOB error which left us to play catchup rugby - three replies saw the score at 17-7 to SMOB at the break - Painswick came out in the second half showing that they should not be taken lightly and more SMOB errors let the score close further to 24-22 in our favour - the final 10 minutes showed a bit more resolve from the determined pack that lead to a try in the dying minutes taking it to 29-22 at the final whistle. Injuries abound today - we hope that Curtis, Loius and the Painswick player make full and speedy recoverys.

Sunday 20/01/08 - SMOB 51 v 5 Lydney Over the bridge for the second pool match of the group saw us take a comfortable win over a much improved Lyndey (since our last encounter). The opposition were strong at the ruck, and turned ball over on a number of occasions as Mary's rested on their memories over the last two ton plus defeats of the severnsiders. The rugby was not pretty and SMOB need to work on their support and distribution - more tries could have been taken.

Sunday 13/01/08 - SMOB 32 v 5 Frampton Cotterell
St Mary's bounced back well from last weeks defeat to Clifton with a comfortable win over our neighbours. Playing downhill with the strong wind in the first half Mary's had a strong bench for the uphill second session. Frampton showed their determined sprit and took the ball to line on a number of occasions. Mary's ill discipline conceed numerous penalties which Frampton failed to convert to pressure and points.

Sunday 06/01/08 - SMOB 12 v 21 Clifton
A very close game - equal at half time. Clifton took the early try and it looked as if Mary's were heading for another day in the Cribbs Causeway doldrums in a game that suddenly saw pressure exerted on a shocked Clifton pack. The normally forcefull forwards were not allowed any possession or territory for .most of the first half as Mary's kept pressure on the Clifton try line going in at the break 7-7.
The second half saw Clifton come out of the traps and put on a second and third try from the set peices which were ably converted as Mary's line out faultered and mistakes crept in. Mary's kept up the pressure and were at Cliftons line on more than one ocassion and the pressure finally told with a well held chargedown ending the game with a 21-12 scoreline.
Clifton's perceived status as one of the best sides in the area has been challenged on more than one ocassion this season and Mary's psychological bogey of never having beaten them was cracked today with the intense pressure from the lads in emerald green.
It felt like a win!

Sunday 16/12/07 - SMOB 12 v 34 Painswick
A slighlty light Mary's squad travelled to the Cotswolds for this game, the first against Painswick on record. Thanks to Painswick for the loan of two players. SMOB had a poor first half, but came through in the second to stave off a potentially embarrasing defeat. Hopefully for the return leg we can offer Painswick a stronger fixture.
Sunday 02/12/07 - SMOB 5 v 57 Bath Avon - BJCC Semi Final)
A very bad day at the office for SMOB with Avon showing their intent with the first score after a few minutes - SMOB picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and set off down the slope to make amends - the mind was willing and the body able, however Avon managed two more before Chile Boy was able to respond with a good run, cover tackle and back on his feet to finish. 24-5 to Avon at half time meant the match was still not out of reach with many decisions at the breakdown going against us. In the second half SMOB made Avon look good with missed tackles, flat & static attacks and having Avon in their faces from being one big step ahead of the back foot. At the end of the day we could have done more to thwart the attack but the desire to stop them had vanished. The better side triumphed and go through to the final of the renamed BJCC (Somerset & Wiltshire) Final against Chippenham.
Well done to the ENTIRE SQUAD - you made Dan and Johan proud to have made the semi-finals.
In true Mary's style though we were last out of the bar.

Sunday 25/11/07 – SMOB 51 v 0 Bristol
Top marks for SMOB with the first try from a Curtis Breakaway setting to tone of the game from the kick off. Bristol seem to have lost their tackling arms and the half time score of 24-0 to SMOB reflecting the intent of both the forwards and backs who played today as units and supported each other fully. The second half saw no let off in the intensity as five changes from SMOB saw the game reach a new high as the Props took up conversion kicking as a second hobby. Two tries early after the break and three in the last twenty saw this side well and truly beaten.

Sunday 18/11/07 - SMOB 5 v 22 Caldicot
A cold windy wet Sunday with a strong easterly saw our only available 15 put up a spirited fight against a Caldicot side out to wreak revenge for our heavy toll on them away last season. Strong tackling, defence and spirited attacks saw SMOB go down 22 points by the interval. Injury was starting to take its toll when reinforcements arrived in the shape of the county players who had been at the representative fixture that morning. With the second half into the wind and fresh legs SMOB were able to pull a score back, but never really got a grip on the game. Caldicot were full of chat talking for Wales and fought to keep the English comeback down. The final score represented yet another game of two halves with Caldi failing to make a score in the second session.
Sunday 11/11/07 - SMOB 31 v 32 Old Cryptians
What a game - certainly one of two halves, the first belonging to Old Cryptians. This newly formed squad came out on the downhill slope with some strong running lines from deep, scoring 3 tries in the first quarter; Mary's were slow to react and despite some strong efforts up the slope were unable to respond. It was into the second quarter that Mary's found the resolve and after a forced substitution the game evened up a bit. The second half was a different game played by a different team - strong forward play and support saw the tables turn and with the advantage of the downward slope pace was building up. In the end Mary's fitness lead comeback was too little too late and the final try and conversion by Mary's saw the game finish at a deserved 32-31 in favour of the Crpyts.

Sunday 04/11/07 - SMOB 48 v 12 Chew Valley (BJCC Qtr Final-Away)
An excellent win for SMOB with the half time score of 19-12 to SMOB reflecting the slow start made by Mary's forwards and backs alike. It was always going to be the first score of the second half that decided on the winner. Mary's were quick out of the blocks and the second half saw Chew Valley flagging against Mary’s potent attack. With hatricks from Nathan and Curtis amongst others. Chew was devastated by the 29 to nil in that second half. Mary's were down to 14 men with a red against Ross, and even his dad conceded a penalty in a strictly refereed game.
Onto Avon RFC in the semi-final - bearing in mind their defeat of Clifton and Cleve, they should not be taken lightly.

Sunday 28/10/07 - SMOB 48 v 10 Frampton Cottrell (Friendly - Away)
A much improved performance for the expectant coach - SMOB delivering a robust attacking game and a superb defence to a home Frampton Side keen to secure bragging rights down the Pavil, up the high streets and at Ridings, Patchway, Marlwood and Filton Schools. Frampton looked up for it from the start even after a first Asante try - St Mary's only offered a one directional game despite kicking pressure in the second half - 5 tries to the backs (all for Asante - 3 superb individuals and two from scrum half Partridges box kicking and team pressure) and 3 to the forwards - a try fest against a supposed full strength Frampton side.
Photos - Frampton Cottrell - Friendly - 28/10/07
Sunday 21/10/07 - SMOB 10 v 55 Keynsham (REVISED TO - HOME)
Keynsham displayed their strength and depth and soon had SMOB playing off the back foot - not pretty rugby with SMOB missing tackle after tackle and looking at the ball rather than playing it. We need to see a turnaround to take us back to the recent up form we have been displaying.
Photos - Keynsham - Friendly - 21/10/07
Sunday 14/10/07 - SMOB 36 v 17 Weston Hornets BJCC Round 1 (Home)
A cracking win for SMOB with the half time score of 5-17 against us reflecting the intent of a reduced Hornets Squad remembering their easy defeat of us at the end of last season. The second half saw SMOB spur into action and assert their authority over a slightly laid back Hornets. SMOB took control of the match leading to NIL POINTS for Hornets in the second session. SMOB came away well deserved winners scoring 6 tries and 3 conversions. MOTM Jack L for his attritional attitude and tackle of the match.

Sunday 07/10/07 - SMOB lots v 0 Kingswood (Away)
Sadly a frustrating morning for the team from SMOB who were hoping for a good run out prior to the cup game next week. Kingswood raised 11 players who did not seem to want to be playing together, let alone against an opposition. An unmeaning full 11 a side meant that we could not really use this as a basis for selection, but at least everyone got a good run out with a maiden try for birdie and two for Callum amongst a host of others.
Photos - Kingswood - Friendly - 07/10/07
Sunday 30/09/07 - SMOB 48 v 7 Walcott (Home)
A good win for SMOB with the half time score of 12-7 to SMOB reflecting the intensity of the first half and the depth and ability of our squad. The second half allowed SMOB to re-enforce their position and take control of the match leading to an even distribution of tries between the forwards and backs. The final score did not do justice to Walcott who put up an excellent performance.

Sunday 23/09/07 - SMOB U15s 31 v 21 Weston Super Mare (BJCC Preliminary)
A hard fought out win for SMOB with a purple patch seeing the game nearly slip away from them. Solid forward play and good delivery to the backs. Still work to do but nether the less a win in what was a toughly contested game.
Photos - Weston Super Mare - BJCC Preliminary Game 23/09/07
Sunday 09/09/07 - SMOB U15s 20 v 21 Old Richians (Pre Season Trial)
A toughly contested affair with both sides wanting to make their U15s "mark" in this physical encounter - a few off the ball incidents resulted in a marred but otherwise good start for all players, coaches and parents alike. Old Richians scoring a well deserved last session try and conversion to take the spoils.
